Automation Devices, Inc (ADI), a vibratory feeder manufacturer, recently purchased a new 5 axis vertical machining center for their Fairview, Pa. manufacturing facility. A similar machine was purchased in 2011 but an increase in production levels have made this purchase a necessity. With a 20% larger capacity, this machining center will be able to handle larger vibratory feeder components that previously had to be outsourced or required a manual method of machining.
ADI President Kevin Smith attributes this upswing in business to the improving economy. “A decade ago, we outsourced the machining of our parts and focused on bowl building and tooling. But with business slowing down with the decline in the economy several years ago, we looked at what we could start doing in-house,” explains Smith. “Now with things turning around the last few years, we are continuing the trend of doing more of our machining work in-house.” “Not only does this help us to maintain costs, but it also enables us to provide our customers with shorter lead times since we aren’t at the mercy of an outside vendor,” adds Smith.
